Die in formenreichen Kleinarten vorkommende Staude erreicht eine Höhe von 50 bis 150 cm. Der runde, hohle Stängel ist meist nur in der oberen Hälfte verzweigt und trägt hellrosa bis weiße, in rispigen Trugdolden angeordneten Blüten. Die Blätter sind fiederschnittig oder gefiedert. Die frischen Blüten besitzen einen angenehmen Duft, erst beim Trocknen entsteht der charakteristische Baldriangeruch.
