Die bis zu 40 cm hoch wachsende Pflanze kommt überall als Unkraut vor. Sie blüht fast das ganze Jahr über und trägt somit gleichzeitig Blüten und Früchte. Die Blüten sind klein und weiß, die Früchte kleine, eckig-herzförmige, flache Schötchen. Medizinisch verwendet werden die zum Ende der Blütezeit gesammelten, oberirdischen Pflanzenteile. Capsella bursa-pastoris, known by its common name shepherd's-purse because of its triangular, purse-like pods, is a small (up to 0.5m) annual and ruderal species, and a member of the Brassicaceae or mustard family. Unlike most flowering plants, it flowers almost all year round. Capsella is gathered from the wild or grown for food, to supplement animal feed, for cosmetics, and for medicinal purposes.
