Kapern sind die eingelegten Blütenknospen des Echten Kapernstrauches (Capparis spinosa), auch Dorniger Kapernstrauch genannt, aus der Familie der Kaperngewächse (Capparaceae), der in Südeuropa und praktisch im ganzen Mittelmeergebiet heimisch ist. Sie werden seit der Antike als pikante Kochzutat verwendet, galten aber auch als Heilmittel und Aphrodisiakum.
