Das Geißblatt ist eine Kletterpflanze, die bis zu 6 m lang werden kann. Man findet es in Wäldern und auf Heideböden. Die Pflanze bildet eine Traube von langen, roten röhrenförmigen Blüten. Die Blütenblätter sind außen rot und innen weiß. Nach ihrer Bestäubung färben sich die Blüten gelb. Die Blütezeit ist von Juni bis August.
