Die in mehreren Varianten vorkommende Blutwurz ist eine rhizombildende Staude mit gelben, gestielten, meist vierzähligen Blüten. Das Rhizom färbt sich an frischen Bruch- oder Schnittstellen rasch blutrot ("Tormentillrot"), da die Gerbstoffe an der Luft in farbige Verbindungen umgewandelt werden. Die handförmigen Blätter besitzen grob gezähnte Teilblätter.
